The Wild Animal Park is an expansive wildlife sanctuary that is home to more than 3,500 animals representing more than 400 species. Its renowned botanical collection represents 3,500 species and 1.5 million specimens.
Over half of the park's 1,800 acres (730 hectares) have been set aside as protected native species habitat. Exhibits are centered on the Nairobi Village, home to flamingos, meerkats and gorillas. Plan to spend time at Lorikeet Landing, as well as Condor Ridge with condors, bighorn sheep and porcupines. Kilimanjaro Safari Walk, a two-mile long path, brings visitors face to face with lions, tigers, elephants, giraffes and rhinos. The enclosed African Aviary features feathered friends in wetlands and forest settings. At Lion Camp see a pride of lions, while the Heart of Africa features cheetahs, more giraffes and monkeys on Primate Island. View herds of Asian and African elephants in the Elephant Overlook. Showcasing the tropical conditions of Central and South America, the Hidden Jungle highlights butterflies, insects, orchids and hummingbirds.
Activities include a 30-minute Journey into Africa tour, balloon and photography safaris, plus animal encounters (all require an additional fee), plus animal shows.
Hours (park): daily 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission.
Location: 35 miles (56 kilometers) north of downtown San Diego in the San Pasqual Valley near Escondido, California. Take Highway 163 or Interstate 15 (I-15) to Via Rancho Parkway and follow the signs.
