The Cottage
For a great end to my visit to the San Diego area, my friends took me to a popular brunch spot called The Cottage. Although there was a chill in the air and the fog still lingered at 10 a.m., every table inside and out was full when we arrived. Knowing that there is often a wait, the restaurant provides mini cups of their excellent coffee and warm cinnamon coffee cake to entice you to stay, which worked for us!
Even with every seat filled, it took about 20 minutes for us to be seated, including passing up an outdoor table in favor of the warmer inside after about 10 minutes. Once seated we were welcomed by a very cordial waiter who took our coffee order and removed our coffee cups so they could be replaced with heated mugs filled with steaming coffee.
The menu provided a great balance of sweet and savory and my friend Sara highly recommended the sweet options, but said we couldn't go wrong either way. On the savory side, options ranged from...

On the savory side, options ranged from omelets and scrambles with innovative toppings such as chicken apple sausage and mashed potatoes to more traditional eggs Benedict and Mexican offerings like chilaquiles. Sweet options included buttermilk and oat pancakes, fresh granola, which Sara describes as "miniature oatmeal cookies" and brioche French toast to name a few.
As a pancake lover, I couldn't pass up The Cottage's oat version with bananas. The four huge cakes were filled with bananas and had a nutty, but light texture that you just don't get with the regular buttermilk version. And Sara's granola did taste like warm oatmeal cookies.
With great food, impeccable service, fair prices and nice touches like the coffee and food while you wait and warmed mugs of coffee, The Cottage is a restaurant I would recommend to anyone visiting La Jolla.
