Last Chance to See Jellies Exhibit at California's Monterey Bay Aquarium

EDITOR'S UPDATE: The space currently occupied by “Jellies: Living Art” will be replaced with a special exhibition showcasing “The Secret Lives of Seahorses,” which opens April 6, 2009. Visitors can still find permanent displays of jellies in the aquarium’s Drifter’s Gallery.

There's one last chance for visitors to see the amazing and award-winning Jellies: Living Art special exhibition. The show will close on September 14, 2008, following an extended run at the Monterey Bay Aquarium on California's coast.

Fascinated visitors have praised the unique blend of stunning live exhibits and intriguing art, which includes a large installation by renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. One highlight is a walk-through tunnel that surrounds visitors with hypnotic music and hundreds of swarming moon jellies. Aquarium biologists continue to bring new species of jellies to the public, including the rare and beautiful spotted comb jelly and the gorgeous Australian spotted jelly.

In Jellies, visitors encounter animals never seen before in North America when they take a sensory-rich tour through galleries that explore the beauty and fascination of these delicate creatures. Live animals include the rarely seen flower hat jelly and blue jelly, as well the upside-down jelly, spotted jelly, black sea nettle and more.

For summer visitors, exploring will mean a full lineup of Aquarium Adventures programs, including behind-the-scenes tours, Science Under Sail excursions on Monterey Bay and children's scuba diving in the Great Tide Pool. Check the aquarium's website for further details.

The Ocean's Edge galleries, which opened last summer, finalized a two-year long re-creation of the original aquarium. This followed an earlier renovation of the aquarium's main entrance and ticketing lobby, and completion of exhibits interpreting the historic Hovden Cannery that once occupied the site.

Monterey's facility opened back in 1984, kicking off a wave of aquarium projects throughout the U.S. Its mission is to inspire conservation of the oceans. Open daily except Christmas Day.
