It provides a dramatic and playful public space and just across the street is a new park, extending the museum visit outdoors with space for running, climbing, family picnics and views of the trains and trolley going by.
Designed by San Diego architect Rob Wellington Quigley, the three-story environmentally friendly, modern structure is made from recycled building materials and features a solar electric system, water-saving devices, and natural day lighting and convection cooling. It is one of the first "green" museums in California.
Hours: Thursday to Tuesday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission.
Location: in the downtown marina district. Take Interstate 5 (I-5) south to exit 17, merge onto Front St. and continue to the convention center. The museum is on the right at Island Ave.
