A Zoo Within the San Francisco Zoo

Within the San Francisco Zoo is the Insect Zoo. When this mini-zoo opened in 1979, it was one of the first insectariums in the country and remains one of the most popular exhibits. From velvet ants and scorpions to hissing cockroaches, more than 30 species are exhibited in eye-level glass terrariums. There’s also a working beehive.

The popular weekend Insects in Action demonstrations enables visitors to explore the hidden world of insects and other arthropods. In case you were wondering, in recent years the spider web climbing structure has been completely rebuilt.

The historic San Francisco Zoo is Northern California’s largest zoological park. It encompasses 100 acres and is open daily.
