Understanding the Hawaiian Alphabet

The Hawaiian alphabet only has 13 letters - five vowels and eight consonants. Below is an easy guide. Just remember, the five vowels are pronounced with only one sound. And all consonants sound as they do in English, except for two. Each letter in the alphabet is pronounced separately even when there are several vowels in row. After a quick lesson in pronunciation, long words should no longer seem difficult. Go slowly at first. Eventually, visitors will be able to increase the speed at which they say things.

Vowels
A - "ah" as in pot
E - "ay" as in hay
I - "ee" as in week
O - "oh" as in no
U - "oo" as new

Consonants
H, K, L, M, N, P
W - almost always pronounced
' - called an 'okina, it denotes a glottal stop like the break in airflow in the English oh-oh
