At the Albuquerque Aquarium visitors are invited to take a journey down the Rio Grande from Albuquerque to its mouth in the Gulf of Mexico. Along the way various ecosystems and species are showcased: freshwater rivers, estuaries, coral reefs and open and deep ocean habitats. Other highlights include an eel tunnel, seahorses, luminous jellies and a 285,000-gallon saltwater tank with brown, sand tiger, blacktop and nurse sharks, reef fish, eels and sea turtles, among others. This one-of-a-kind museum, located just off Old Town Plaza, has living specimens of common, uncommon and very rare rattlesnakes of North, Central and South America in naturally landscaped habitats. More than 30 species can be seen, then view a seven-minute film on this contributor to the ecological balance of our hemisphere. Throughout the museum are rattlesnake artifacts from early American history, Native American culture, medicine, the arts and advertising.
