Maps and I-140/Highway 17 Bypass or Wilmington Bypass

Thanks to Interstate 40 (I-40), Wilmington, North Carolina, is an easy-to-reach vacation destination. I-140/Highway 17 Bypass or Wilmington Bypass opened in mid-2006 and is a 7.5-mile section that connects Highway 17 with U.S. 421, effectively reducing some of the congestion on Market Street and Oleander Drive.

Please note that many of the maps do not show the new bypass and there is little signage that distinguishing regular Highway 17 with the bypass, as such it’s easy to get confused. On more than one occasion, we drove the wrong direction and needed to backtrack.

As a helpful hint, north of downtown, find Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway/U.S. Highway 74, which runs from North Third Street to Eastwood Road and appears to cut travel time between Wrightsville Beach and downtown.
