Clemente’s
Clementine’s should be a quaint restaurant. It’s in downtown Astoria on the corner of 12th and Commercial St. and I suspect that it would be terrific if the wait staff wasn’t so incompetent.
On a Sunday afternoon when there are lots of folks attending the Sunday Market, one would think they’d be adequately staffed with capable personnel. The first sign should have been when we walked in and stood in front of the hostess stand for a fair amount of time and no one came out to seat us (another couple came in after we were seated, stood there for awhile and just walked out – smart people).
Hostess/waiter Paul eventually arrived on the scene.
The large room with colorful orange-red walls and wood floors has a very open feel – perhaps because the large glass storefront windows overlook the sidewalk providing an easy view of market goers. We ordered a house salad and a bowl of cioppino, a stew with chunks of local seafood/fish that was very good, and a chicken dish but ended up with Caesar salad instead.
Waiter Paul wandered off and never returned with the ice tea that was ordered and it wasn’t for the hectic pace created by the two and later three tables he was servicing.
After a period of time, Waiter Paul came back and told us that there had been a problem with the computer. We re-created the order for him and off he went again. (This must be the standard excuse because that’s the same thing we heard two days earlier at McMenamin’s Pub in Oregon City).
Then after some more time, Waiter Paul came back to say that the chicken was sold out. I have no patience for kitchen and waitstaff that do not communicate to each other or their customers. Also regardless of how hungry I am, I will find a cheap quick substitute. It’s as if you are trying to get out of the place as fast as you can, but instead everything is going in slow motion.
Perhaps on a weekend evening when real waiters show up, Clemente’s could be a great restaurant.
