Check This! New Baggage Fees May Apply. Your Wallet May Be Lighter as a Result.

One of my associates just got nailed $50 for three extra pounds on June 25, 2008, by a delightful woman named Cheryl who works at US Airways ticket counter in Portland, Oregon. This is especially interesting since this was a nine-day business trip doing research for a travel story on the great state of Oregon - laptops, Blackberries, cameras and luggage.

Ms. Cheryl wanted us to take our bags and go over in the corner and re-arrange the contents of our dirty laundry between our two bags. I had spent the evening before rolling every piece to neatly and tightly fit into my suitcase, so as to maximize space. I travel frequently. And ya' know, it's not like there was a scale in the corner where we could make sure all of this effort would prove to be effective. I especially love the fact that we have to trust that their scales aren't calibrated in their favor.

And yes in the black and white sense, it was three pounds over weight, but my bag was 14 lbs. under weight. So if she wanted us to co-mingle our laundry, why couldn't Ms. Cheryl average the weight. Guess it only works in one direct, huh? And since I vote by my wallet, this will cost US Airways at least two travelers their business as long as I can remember that day.

And to just give you a sense of how ironic this fee was. The flight out from the east coast was three l-o-n-g hours late. Probably doesn't sound bad, but when a 9:30 p.m. arrival now means you aren't getting to the Portland airport until 12:30 a.m. and then tack on those three extra time zones, it feels like 4:30 a.m. At check-in for the outbound red-eye flight was already scheduled to be a late leaving. Ya know that takes a lot of nerve for an airline to quibble over three pounds.
