A hotbed of jazz during the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, the 18th and Vine District was revived in the 1990s. The area is now home to the American Jazz Museum with the Blue Room, where many top jazz acts perform, and the Negro League Museum, that chronicles its history from the Civil War to 1960. The restored 1912 Gem Theater now serves as a performing arts center. Out front, a statue of native son Charlie Parker offers a year-round reminder of the district's legacy. More

According to the Princess Anne County/Virginia Beach Historical Society, Adam Thoroughgood arrived in America in 1621 as an indentured servant. In 1736, he was granted a land parcel.
